How long does FedEx Ground take?
FedEx Ground takes 1–5 business days in the contiguous U.S. and 3–7 business days to or from Alaska and Hawaii, with the exact count set by the distance between origin and destination (FedEx Ground service page). Transit time is the number of business days a package spends moving through the network, counted from the day FedEx picks it up, not the day the order was placed.
A package going to a neighboring state usually lands at the low end of that range, and a coast-to-coast shipment at the high end. The most precise answer for a specific lane is FedEx's own Ground service maps, which color-code transit days from any origin ZIP code. The day-count is also why carriers and 3PLs publish daily cutoffs: an order that misses the day's pickup starts its 1–5 day clock a day later. Our guide to order cutoff times and ship-by deadlines explains how that plays out for ecommerce orders.
What is the difference between FedEx Ground, Home Delivery, and Ground Economy?
The three services share the same ground network but differ in who they deliver to, which days they deliver, and what options they include. FedEx Ground is the business-address service, FedEx Home Delivery is the residential version of the same product, and FedEx Ground Economy (formerly FedEx SmartPost) is a slower, lower-cost contractual service built for lightweight residential parcels.
| Service (as of Sept. 2026) | Transit time | Delivery days | Size/weight limit | Money-back guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FedEx Ground | 1–5 business days (contiguous U.S.); 3–7 to/from AK and HI | Monday–Friday to businesses | 150 lbs., 108 in. length, 165 in. length plus girth | Suspended |
| FedEx Home Delivery | 1–5 days (contiguous U.S.); 3–7 to/from AK and HI | Every day of the week to residences | 150 lbs., 108 in. length, 165 in. length plus girth | Suspended |
| FedEx Ground Economy | Typically 2–7 business days | Monday–Sunday | 70 lbs., 130 in. length plus girth | Not offered |

How does distance affect FedEx Ground transit days?
Distance is the main driver of FedEx Ground transit time, and FedEx measures it in shipping zones, numbered bands of mileage between the origin and destination ZIP codes. Higher zones mean more transit days and higher rates, so zone and speed move together.
| FedEx zone | Distance from origin | Where it sits in the 1–5 day window |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 2 | 51–150 miles | Shortest lanes; the fast end of the range |
| Zone 3 | 151–300 miles | Short regional lanes |
| Zone 4 | 301–600 miles | Regional; middle of the range |
| Zone 5 | 601–1,000 miles | Multi-state; middle of the range |
| Zone 6 | 1,001–1,400 miles | Long-haul; toward the slow end |
| Zone 7 | 1,401–1,800 miles | Long-haul; toward the slow end |
| Zone 8 | 1,801+ miles (contiguous U.S.) | Cross-country; the slow end of the range |
Zone mileage bands per Sifted's FedEx zone guide; the 1–5 day window is FedEx's published range. FedEx does not publish a fixed day count per zone, so confirm specific lanes on the FedEx Ground service maps. Shipping from a warehouse closer to your customers lowers the average zone, which shortens transit and cuts cost at the same time.
Does FedEx deliver on Saturday and Sunday?
Yes, to homes: FedEx Home Delivery delivers every day of the week, reaching more than 98% of the U.S. population on Saturdays and nearly two-thirds on Sundays, according to FedEx. FedEx Ground shipments to business addresses deliver Monday through Friday only.
FedEx Ground Economy also lists Monday–Sunday delivery on its service page. In practice this means a residential order shipped on a Thursday can arrive over the weekend without paying for an express service, while a B2B order to an office address will wait until Monday. Whether a given address gets Sunday delivery depends on where it is, so treat Sunday as possible rather than promised when you set customer expectations.
What time does FedEx deliver?
FedEx Ground and Home Delivery packages are typically delivered by 8 p.m., and FedEx describes an 8 a.m.–8 p.m. delivery window for these ground services (FedEx Ground). FedEx also notes that Home Delivery has no official delivery hours, because timing depends on the package and the route.
Business deliveries tend to be scheduled while the business is open, and residential stops can come any time within that window. For a same-day estimate, the tracking page for a specific shipment is more reliable than any general rule. If your customer needs a firmer time, FedEx sells residential options that narrow it down:
| FedEx Home Delivery option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Evening Home Delivery | Delivers between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on the scheduled delivery day |
| Appointment Home Delivery | FedEx phones the recipient in advance to schedule delivery |
| Date Certain Home Delivery | Delivers on a chosen date (not earlier than the standard delivery date), Monday–Sunday, excluding holidays |

What is FedEx Ground Economy and how long does it take?
FedEx Ground Economy is FedEx's lowest-cost ground service for lightweight residential parcels, and it typically takes 2–7 business days depending on distance (FedEx). It was formerly called FedEx SmartPost.
FedEx says the ideal package for Ground Economy weighs 1–10 lbs., with a hard limit of 70 lbs. and 130 inches in length plus girth. It is a contractual service, so you need an account rep to enable it. It also drops several features: no money-back guarantee, declared value, address correction, signature proof of delivery, evening/appointment/date-certain delivery, hazmat, or shipper-requested redirects. SmartPost was known for handing packages to USPS for the last mile; Loop reports that most Ground Economy packages are now delivered by FedEx's own contractor network, with USPS handoffs limited to special cases. For low-value, non-urgent orders it can make sense, but the extra days show up in customer reviews.
Is FedEx Ground guaranteed in 2026?
No, FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery currently carry no money-back guarantee. FedEx suspended its guarantee across services effective December 1, 2025, as TransImpact reported.
Effective February 12, 2026, FedEx reinstated the guarantee for U.S. payors on a short list of express services, including First Overnight, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, and 2Day A.M., plus select international services. FedEx states that the guarantee for all other services "will remain suspended until further notice" (FedEx Money-Back Guarantee). That means late ground deliveries are not refundable, and a quoted ground delivery date is an estimate. If a delivery date truly matters, overnight is currently the guaranteed tier; see our FedEx Overnight guide for how those services compare.
What do FedEx Ground residential and peak surcharges cost in 2026?
FedEx Ground residential shipments pay a residential delivery charge on top of the base rate, and during peak season they also pay a per-package demand surcharge. For the 2026 holiday period, FedEx's demand surcharge on Ground residential and Home Delivery residential packages ranges from $0.50 to $0.80 per package from October 26, 2026 through January 17, 2027, and Ground Economy ranges from $2.55 to $4.05, per Supply Chain Dive.
On list rates, FedEx's 2026 general rate increase averaged 5.9% and took effect January 5, 2026 (Supply Chain Dive). FedEx has already announced another average 5.9% increase for U.S. package list rates effective January 4, 2027 (FedEx rate changes). Surcharges move separately from the headline number, so check fedex.com for the current residential and delivery-area charges that apply to your account. What can delay a FedEx Ground delivery?
The most common causes of a late FedEx Ground package are a missed pickup cutoff, holidays, severe weather, peak-season volume, and address errors. Because ground service is not guaranteed, these delays carry no refund.
- Missed cutoffs: a package tendered after the day's pickup starts its transit clock the next business day.
- Weekends and holidays: business-address Ground shipments do not move to delivery on Saturday or Sunday.
- Weather and network disruptions: storms can hold packages at hubs regardless of the service level.
- Peak season: holiday volume strains capacity, which is why FedEx applies demand surcharges from late October.
- Address problems: an incomplete or incorrect address adds attempts or returns.
How can ecommerce brands get faster FedEx Ground delivery?
The most reliable way to speed up FedEx Ground is to shorten the distance: ship from a fulfillment center closer to the customer so more orders fall into low zones. After that, hitting daily cutoffs and choosing the right service per order matter most.
Atomix Logistics is a third-party logistics (3PL) provider that handles order fulfillment for ecommerce and DTC brands. It ships from multiple fulfillment centers and rate-shops UPS, FedEx, and USPS on each order, so a package can go FedEx Home Delivery when that is the best mix of speed and cost and another carrier when it is not. You can see how orders flow from your store to the warehouse on our How It Works page, read how rate shopping and carrier selection work, or check order fulfillment pricing. Atomix works month-to-month, with no long-term contracts.
