Business Days for Shipping: How Long Is 3 Business Days? (2026)

Business days for shipping are the weekdays, Monday through Friday excluding federal and carrier holidays, that carriers count when they quote a transit time. So "3 business days" means three working weekdays after the package ships, which usually works out to three to five calendar days depending on the day it leaves the warehouse.

Updated September 2026.

What is a business day for shipping?

A business day for shipping is any weekday on which a carrier runs its normal pickup, transit, and delivery operations, which means Monday through Friday minus holidays. Carriers state ground transit in business days: UPS Ground and FedEx Ground both quote one to five business days within the contiguous US (ups.com and fedex.com, checked September 2026). USPS is the exception in how it words things; its service pages quote windows in "days" (for example, USPS Ground Advantage in two to five days and Priority Mail in two to three days) and it delivers Monday through Saturday.

Three terms to keep straight:

  • Business days: Working weekdays, Monday through Friday, excluding federal and carrier holidays.
  • Calendar days: Every day of the week, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
  • Ship date: The day the carrier picks up or first scans the package; it is day zero, not day one.

The distinction matters because a "5 business day" shipment is at least seven calendar days once a weekend is included, and eight if a holiday falls in the window.

How long is 3 business days?

Three business days is three weekdays after the ship date, which comes to three calendar days if the package ships Monday or Tuesday and five calendar days if it ships Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Count forward one weekday at a time, skip Saturday and Sunday, and skip any holiday the carrier observes.

The table below assumes the order is placed before the fulfillment center's cutoff, ships the same business day, and uses a carrier that counts Monday through Friday (such as UPS Ground or FedEx Ground). Weekend orders ship on Monday.

Table: Atomix Logistics worked example, no holidays in the window. Add one business day for each observed holiday.

If you are counting business days for something other than a shipment, such as a refund or a "we'll reply within 3 business days" promise, the clock usually starts on the next business day after the request. A request made on Saturday then lands on Wednesday rather than Thursday, because no ship-date step is involved.

How do holidays change the count?

Each holiday the carrier observes removes one business day, pushing delivery back a day. Three 2026 examples, using the carriers' own holiday schedules:

  • Thanksgiving: An order that ships UPS Ground on Wednesday, November 25, 2026 would normally land Monday, November 30 at three business days. Thanksgiving (November 26) is closed, but UPS lists the day after Thanksgiving as normal operations (UPS 2026 holiday schedule), so day one is Friday the 27th and delivery lands Tuesday, December 1.
  • Christmas: A package that ships UPS Ground on Wednesday, December 23 counts Thursday the 24th as day one, skips Friday, December 25 and the weekend, and lands Tuesday, December 29 instead of Monday the 28th.
  • Columbus Day: Monday, October 12 is a USPS holiday with no regular delivery, but UPS lists it as a normal operating day. The same order can therefore arrive a day later via USPS than via UPS.

Is Saturday a business day for shipping?

For most carriers and 3PL warehouses, Saturday is not a business day, so it usually does not count toward a ground transit estimate. Whether a package actually delivers on Saturday is a separate question, and the answer varies by carrier:

  • USPS: Delivers Monday through Saturday. Priority Mail carries "no surcharges for fuel; residential or rural delivery; or Saturday delivery" (usps.com Priority Mail, checked September 2026).
  • UPS: Offers Saturday service for residential and commercial packages. UPS states that ground residential Saturday delivery has no additional fees, while Saturday ground commercial delivery carries an additional package fee (ups.com weekend pickups and deliveries).
  • FedEx: FedEx Home Delivery reaches 98% of the US population on Saturdays with no additional charge for weekend delivery. Saturday delivery on FedEx Express services such as Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, and 2Day carries a fee (fedex.com Saturday and Sunday delivery).

Bottom line: a package may well arrive on a Saturday, especially with USPS or a residential ground service, but UPS and FedEx do not count Saturday when they quote ground transit in business days.

Is Sunday a business day for shipping?

No. Sunday is not a business day for any major US carrier and is excluded from standard business-day transit estimates. A few services still move packages on Sundays:

  • USPS: Priority Mail Express delivers 7 days a week, 365 days a year (usps.com), with Sunday and holiday delivery available in many major markets for an additional fee (usps.com Priority Mail Express).
  • FedEx: FedEx Home Delivery delivers on Sundays to nearly two-thirds of the US population (fedex.com).
  • UPS: UPS states there are no pickups or deliveries on Sunday (ups.com).

Which holidays are not business days for the rest of 2026?

The remaining 2026 federal holidays are Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, followed by New Year's Day 2027, per the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. USPS closes on all of them, while UPS and FedEx close only on the major ones. Dates and carrier status as published by each carrier in 2026:

Sources: OPM federal holidays, USPS holidays, UPS 2026 holiday operations schedule, FedEx 2026 holiday service schedule, and FedEx 2026 winter holiday schedule; checked September 2026.

The days around the holidays are modified too. UPS limits Christmas Eve pickups to prearranged Air and international Air packages and delivers only Air and international Air packages on New Year's Eve, and FedEx lists early pickups in some areas on November 27, December 24, and December 31. USPS recommends shipping by December 17 for USPS Ground Advantage and December 18 for Priority Mail to arrive before Christmas in the contiguous US (usps.com 2026 holiday shipping deadlines). Our guide to holiday fulfillment strategies covers how to plan inventory and promotions around these dates.

What is the difference between handling time and transit time?

Handling time is the time from when a customer places an order to when the carrier picks it up, and transit time is the time from carrier pickup to delivery. Shoppers experience the sum of the two, so a brand that quotes carrier transit alone will under-promise the real wait.

  • Handling time (also called processing time): order capture, picking, packing, labeling, and handoff to the carrier. It is controlled by you or your 3PL.
  • Transit time: the carrier's business-day window, set by service level and distance. It is controlled by the carrier.
  • Delivery time: handling time plus transit time, the number the customer actually cares about.

For example, one business day of handling plus three business days of UPS Ground transit means an order placed Monday evening, after cutoff, ships Tuesday and arrives Friday. Showing that full window at checkout is the core of accurate estimated delivery dates for ecommerce.

How do 3PL order cutoff times affect business days?

An order cutoff time is the daily deadline for an order to reach the fulfillment center and still ship that business day, and missing it adds a full business day to delivery. Cutoffs exist because the carrier's scheduled pickup at the warehouse, not picking speed, is the fixed constraint.

  • An order placed before Friday's cutoff ships Friday and can land Wednesday at three business days.
  • The same order placed after Friday's cutoff ships Monday and lands Thursday, a one-day slip that spans a weekend.
  • Orders placed over the weekend join Monday's queue, so Monday cutoffs are often the busiest of the week.

Cutoffs can also slip because of fraud holds, address errors, or late order syncs from your store. Our breakdown of 3PL order cutoff times and ship-by deadlines explains how to set a cutoff your order profile can actually hit, and knowing what time USPS stops delivering helps you set end-of-day expectations for shoppers.

How do you calculate business days for delivery?

To calculate a delivery date in business days, start from the ship date, count forward the carrier's quoted number of weekdays, and skip weekends and holidays. Step by step:

  1. Check whether the order was placed before your fulfillment center's cutoff; if not, move the ship date to the next business day.
  2. Treat the ship date as day zero.
  3. Add the carrier's quoted number of business days, counting only Monday through Friday.
  4. Skip any holiday that carrier observes (USPS observes more of them than UPS or FedEx).
  5. If the carrier delivers on weekends, the package may arrive earlier than the business-day estimate, but do not promise it.

How does Atomix Logistics handle business days?

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturday a business day for shipping?

Usually no. UPS and FedEx quote ground transit in business days, Monday through Friday, so Saturday normally does not count toward the estimate. Packages can still arrive on Saturday: USPS delivers Saturdays with no Priority Mail surcharge, UPS delivers ground residential packages on Saturday with no added fee, and FedEx Home Delivery runs on weekends.

How long is 3 business days?

Three business days is three weekdays, Monday through Friday, not counting weekends or holidays. It equals three to five calendar days depending on the start day. A package that ships Monday arrives Thursday, one that ships Wednesday arrives the following Monday, and a holiday in the window adds one more day.

Is Sunday a business day for shipping?

No. Sunday is not a business day for any major US carrier. UPS says it has no Sunday pickups or deliveries. FedEx Home Delivery reaches nearly two-thirds of the US population on Sundays, and USPS Priority Mail Express offers Sunday and holiday delivery in many major markets for an additional fee.

Do carriers count the ship date as day one?

No. The ship date, when the carrier picks up or scans the package, is day zero, and business day one is the next working weekday. Orders placed after your fulfillment center's daily cutoff do not ship until the next business day, which pushes the whole delivery window back by one day.

What is the difference between handling time and transit time?

Handling time is how long the seller or 3PL takes to pick, pack, and hand an order to the carrier. Transit time is how long the carrier takes from pickup to delivery. Total delivery time is the two added together, so a one-day handling time plus three business days of transit means about four business days from order.

How many business days does standard shipping take?

It depends on the carrier and service. UPS Ground and FedEx Ground both quote one to five business days within the contiguous US, USPS Ground Advantage quotes two to five days, and USPS Priority Mail quotes two to three days. Distance between origin and destination drives where a shipment lands in those ranges.

Do UPS and FedEx deliver on Columbus Day and Veterans Day?

UPS lists Columbus Day and Veterans Day 2026 as normal operating days, while USPS is closed and has no regular delivery. FedEx lists both days as modified service for FedEx Express, with early pickups in some areas. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day are closed for all three carriers.
