Gift Messages and Gift Wrap: How 3PLs Handle Holiday Add-Ons

Short answer: A 3PL handles gift messages and gift wrap as order instructions. The customer's choice at checkout travels with the order into the 3PL's system, appears on the pick ticket or packing screen, and a packer adds the note, insert or wrap at packout before the order is scanned and shipped. Each add-on is usually billed per unit, adds touch time at packout, and can push an order past the daily cutoff, so set up the workflow, pricing and holiday order deadlines with your 3PL by mid-November, before peak volume hits.

How do gift messages get from checkout to the box?

  1. Checkout: the customer ticks a gift option or types a message. Depending on your platform, this is stored as an order note, an order attribute, or a paid add-on line item.
  2. Order sync: the order and its gift data flow from your store into the 3PL's software. This is the step that breaks most often: if the message lives in a field the integration does not map, the warehouse never sees it.
  3. Pick and pack instructions: the gift instruction shows on the pick ticket or packing screen alongside the items.
  4. Packout: the packer adds the printed or handwritten message, any insert, and wrap if offered, then packs the order.
  5. Verification: a scan confirms the order is complete before the label prints.

Before peak, place a few test orders with long messages, emojis and line breaks, and confirm exactly what prints. Atomix's Order Customizations page describes this flow for handwritten notes: messages flow from checkout into the Atomix App and are written by the Atomix team.

What gift options can a 3PL offer?

OptionHow it is usually handledImpact on packout
Printed gift messageMessage printed on a card or slip and placed in the boxLow: prints with the order
Handwritten noteWritten by warehouse staff on brand or standard stationeryMedium: priced and timed by length
Gift receipt or price-free packing slipSlip printed without pricesLow: a template setting
Marketing insert or holiday cardStocked like a SKU and added to every order or to a segmentLow to medium
Gift wrap or gift boxItem wrapped, boxed or bagged before it goes in the shipping cartonHigh: materials, labor, sometimes a bigger box

What does Atomix offer for gift orders?

According to the Atomix Order Customizations page:

  • Handwritten gift notes: you choose paper, pen, ink color and character count, on your stationery or standard Atomix stationery. Pricing is based on 100-character increments.
  • Printed gift messages: digitally printed and inserted into each order, a scalable alternative to handwritten notes.
  • Marketing inserts: flyers, brochures or discount codes are treated like SKUs, stored in your Pod, tracked in real time and verified with two-step scans.
  • Dynamic inserts: through partner Yuzu, inserts generated at packout and personalized per order, with a small cost per print.
  • Branded packaging and packing slips: branded tape and custom packaging, plus a packing slip in every order with a premium logo option.

Every customization is tracked in the Atomix App and verified with barcode scans. Full gift wrapping is not listed as a standard option on that page, so if wrapping is central to your holiday offer, scope it with us as a custom project early. Pre-wrapped or pre-boxed gift SKUs can also be handled as holiday kits.

How much do gift add-ons cost?

3PLs typically bill gift add-ons per unit on top of the standard pick and pack fee: per note (often tiered by length), per insert, or per wrap. Gift wrap also adds material cost and can move an order into a larger box, which can raise its dimensional weight. Three ways to keep it profitable:

  • Charge for it at checkout. A paid gift-wrap add-on covers the fee and sorts serious buyers from casual clicks.
  • Cap message length. If notes are priced by character increments, set your checkout limit at the top of a pricing tier.
  • Bundle instead of wrapping. A pre-built gift set ships as one SKU, avoiding per-order wrap labor.

How do gift add-ons affect holiday cutoffs?

Every extra touch adds packing time, and during peak that time competes with every other order in the building. If gift orders take longer, ask your 3PL whether they need an earlier daily cutoff than standard orders. Then work backward from carrier deadlines. For delivery by Christmas in the contiguous US, USPS recommends shipping USPS Ground Advantage by December 17 and Priority Mail by December 18. FedEx's published dates, as compiled by Value Added Resource, run from December 15 for Ground Economy to December 17 to 22 for Ground and Home Delivery depending on transit days. Check UPS's year-end dates when they are published.

Set your storefront's gift deadline a day or two before the warehouse can actually make it, so late gift orders do not land on the last truck. Our guide to order cutoff times shows how cutoffs and carrier pickups interact.

Gift-order setup checklist for mid-November

  1. Confirm which checkout field holds the gift message and that your 3PL integration maps it.
  2. Run test orders: long messages, special characters, multiple items, mixed gift and non-gift items.
  3. Agree on per-unit pricing for notes, inserts and any wrap.
  4. Get stationery, cards, inserts and wrap materials received and counted at the warehouse before peak.
  5. Decide on price-free packing slips or gift receipts for gift orders.
  6. Set storefront gift deadlines from your 3PL's cutoffs and carrier holiday dates.
  7. Agree how missing or unreadable messages are handled: hold the order, ship without, or contact you.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 3PL include a gift message with an order?

Yes. Many 3PLs can print a message on a card or slip; some, including Atomix, also offer handwritten notes. The message needs to come through your store integration in a field the 3PL reads.

Do 3PLs gift wrap orders?

Some do as a custom service, usually at a per-unit charge for labor and materials. Confirm it before you advertise wrap at checkout, and consider pre-kitted gift sets as an alternative.

How is a handwritten note priced at Atomix?

Atomix prices handwritten notes in 100-character increments, with your choice of paper, pen and ink color.

When should gift options be set up for the holidays?

By mid-November, so integrations are tested and materials are received before peak order volume.

Do gift options slow down shipping?

They add packing time. Ask your 3PL whether gift orders need an earlier cutoff, and build that into your holiday deadlines.
