How do you stop candles from arriving broken?

Glass vessels are heavy, rigid, and unforgiving. The damage patterns are predictable, and so are the fixes.

Right-size the carton

Most candle breakage traces back to a box that is too big. Movement inside the carton is what breaks glass. A carton library sized to your actual vessel dimensions beats any amount of extra void fill.

Immobilize, do not just cushion

Molded pulp inserts, corrugated dividers, or foam end caps that hold the vessel in place work far better than loose fill packed around it. For multi-candle orders, dividers are not optional — glass hitting glass is the most common failure.

Test the pack-out before peak

Wax softens and can slump or bloom in a hot trailer, and some vessels are more prone to cracking in extreme cold. If you ship nationally through summer and winter, ask whether the warehouse holds ambient temperature control and how it handles extended weather delays.

Can I ship candles by air?

Finished candles typically ship by ground without issue, and ground is almost always the right economic answer for heavy glass anyway. Regulated fragrance liquids moving under limited quantity provisions are generally restricted to ground. Confirm with your carrier.

Do I need a hazmat-certified warehouse?

Not for standard poured candles. If a meaningful part of your catalog is flammable liquids, ask specifically about trained shippers, segregated storage, and carrier approvals — not every 3PL is set up for it.

What damage rate is normal for candles?

There is no universal benchmark, and any 3PL quoting one should be asked how they measured it. What matters is that you and your partner track damage by SKU, agree on a target, and change the pack-out when a SKU exceeds it.
