THE BASICS

Shipping Zones and Transit Times Explained

How Shipping Zones Affect Transit Time

Carriers like UPS, FedEx, and USPS group destinations into zones based on how far a package travels from its origin ZIP code. Domestic ground zones run from Zone 2 for nearby destinations up to Zone 8 for the farthest ones. A higher zone means a longer transit time and a higher shipping rate. For a deeper look, read our guide to UPS ground maps and shipping zones.

How Warehouse Location Affects Delivery Speed

Where your inventory sits decides how long your orders spend in transit. A brand shipping every order from one coast sends a large share of packages into Zones 7 and 8, the longest ground transit times. A warehouse closer to the middle of the country keeps more orders in lower zones, which means faster delivery and lower postage.

Single-Node vs. Multi-Node Fulfillment

Single-node fulfillment ships every order from one warehouse. It keeps inventory simple to manage, and a central location can still reach much of the country quickly. Multi-node fulfillment splits inventory across two or more warehouses so each order ships from the one closest to the customer. That lowers average zones and transit days, with the tradeoff of managing stock in more than one place.

Choosing Between Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Salt Lake City

Atomix runs fulfillment centers in Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Salt Lake City. Milwaukee covers the Midwest and central US, Baltimore serves the East Coast, and Salt Lake City reaches the Mountain West and West Coast. Pairing two locations lets you place inventory near where your customers are concentrated.

Transit Time vs. Total Delivery Time

Transit time is one part of how fast an order arrives. Order cutoff times, how quickly the warehouse picks and packs, and the carrier service you choose all play a role. At Atomix, orders placed by 12 PM local time for express and 1 PM local time for ground and economy ship the same business day. Use the calculator as a planning tool, then talk with our team about the service levels that fit your customers.

FAQ

Transit Time Calculator FAQs

How accurate are the transit times on this map?

The map shows estimated business days in transit from each Atomix warehouse, based on carrier zones and the shipping method you choose. Actual delivery times vary by carrier, destination, and time of year, so treat them as estimates rather than guarantees.

Can I compare all three warehouses at once?

Yes. Select Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Salt Lake City together to see coverage from all three Atomix fulfillment centers, or choose any one or two locations to compare smaller setups.

Does Atomix offer faster shipping than ground?

Yes. Atomix supports expedited carrier services, including 2-day delivery. See our 2-day shipping and fulfillment services for details.

How do I know if multi-node fulfillment is right for my brand?

It usually pays off when your customers are spread across the country and faster delivery would lift conversion or cut shipping costs. Request a free shipping network analysis and we'll show you how your orders would ship from each location.
