FBA Fees, Calculator, and Need-to-Know Information

Amazon FBA fees are what Amazon charges to store, pick, pack, ship, and support your orders. Every FBA sale carries a category referral fee, a per-unit fulfillment fee set by the product’s price, weight, and dimensions, and a monthly storage fee based on cubic feet. Surcharges for aged inventory, returns, removals, and inbound placement apply on top.
Updated August 2026. All fees on this page were verified against Amazon’s published schedule as of August 2026. Amazon revises its US referral and FBA fee schedule at least once a year, so confirm every figure in Seller Central before you price a product.
What are Amazon FBA fees made of?
Amazon FBA fees are not one charge. They are a stack of separate line items, and each one is triggered by a different thing you do.
- Selling plan fee — a flat monthly or per-item cost to have a selling account at all.
- Referral fee — a percentage of the total sales price, set by product category.
- FBA fulfillment fee — a per-unit charge for picking, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns handling. Amazon states these costs are based on the product’s price, weight, and dimensions (Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon, retrieved August 2026).
- Monthly storage fee — charged monthly based on the space your inventory occupies, calculated on daily average volume in cubic feet (Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon, retrieved August 2026).
- Situational surcharges — aged inventory, returns processing, removals and disposals, and FBA inbound placement service.
What can you actually verify about FBA fees in 2026?
Amazon publishes some fee figures openly and keeps the detailed per-unit rate cards inside Seller Central. Below is only what Amazon itself publishes on pages that are readable without a seller login.
| Fee | Published amount | Amazon source |
|---|---|---|
| Professional selling plan | $39.99 per month | sell.amazon.com/pricing |
| Individual selling plan | $0.99 per item sold | sell.amazon.com/pricing |
| Referral fee | 5% to 45% of total sales price, by category | sell.amazon.com/pricing |
| Referral fee minimum | $0.30 per item in most categories | sell.amazon.com/pricing |
| Media closing fee (books, DVD, music, software, video) | $1.80 per item, on top of the referral fee | sell.amazon.com/pricing |
| 2026 FBA fee change | Average increase of $0.08 per unit sold, less than 0.5% of an average item’s selling price | Amazon Selling Partners letter, October 15, 2025 |
| Aged inventory surcharge | Charged monthly on items stored in a fulfillment center more than 181 days (amount not published publicly) | sell.amazon.com/fulfillment-by-amazon |
| Low-Price FBA rates | Reduced fulfillment rates for products priced under $10 (rate not published publicly) | Amazon, A guide to Amazon FBA fees, July 24, 2026 |
Why doesn’t this guide print a full FBA fulfillment fee table?
Because Amazon no longer publishes the per-size-tier FBA fulfillment rate card or the per-cubic-foot storage rate on any page you can read without logging in. Both now live behind Seller Central help pages that require a seller account.
A fee table copied from a competitor’s blog is a guess. A guess that is off by twenty cents per unit will quietly destroy the margin on a $14 product. So this guide prints only what Amazon publishes and sends you to the two places that return your exact rate.
Amazon confirms the size-tier logic without giving public numbers: “Amazon FBA costs are based on size tiers and product weight. Amazon groups products into categories—from small standard to extra-large—and charges more as size and weight increase” (Amazon, A guide to Amazon FBA fees, July 24, 2026).
How do you get your exact FBA fee for a specific product?
Two tools return a real number for a real ASIN. Both are current as of August 2026.
- The Amazon Revenue Calculator (formerly marketed as the FBA calculator) at sellercentral.amazon.com/revcalpublic. Search the Amazon catalog for a product, or define one with dimensions, weight, category, price, and shipping charges. It compares Amazon fulfillment against your own fulfillment side by side.
- The Fee Preview report in Seller Central. In the main menu, hover over Reports, select Fulfillment, then Fee Preview (Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon, retrieved August 2026).
Amazon notes the Revenue Calculator covers referral fees, fulfillment costs, monthly storage costs, and variable closing fees, but does not build in long-term storage, removal orders, or return processing costs — you add those in the miscellaneous cost field (Amazon, How to estimate profits with the FBA Revenue Calculator, August 27, 2025). Sellers who skip that step consistently overstate their margin.
Which referral fee applies to your category?
The referral fee is the largest single Amazon fee for most sellers, and it applies whether you use FBA or ship yourself. These rates are from Amazon’s public pricing page, retrieved August 20, 2026.
| Category | Referral fee |
|---|---|
| Home and Kitchen | 15% |
| Beauty, Health, and Personal Care | 8% at $10.00 or less; 15% above $10.00 |
| Grocery and Gourmet | 8% at $15.00 or less; 15% above $15.00 (no minimum) |
| Clothing and Accessories | 5% at $15.00 or less; 10% above $15.00 up to $20.00; 17% above $20.00 |
| Pet Supplies | 15%, except 22% for veterinary diets |
| Consumer Electronics | 8% |
| Amazon Device Accessories | 45% |
| Jewelry | 20% up to $250.00; 5% on any portion above $250.00 |
| Everything Else | 15% |
What changed in Amazon’s 2026 FBA fee update?
Amazon announced the 2026 changes on October 15, 2025. Unless otherwise noted, they took effect January 15, 2026 (Amazon Selling Partners, Update to U.S. Referral and Fulfillment by Amazon fees for 2026).
- FBA fees rose by an average of $0.08 per unit sold, which Amazon described as less than 0.5% of an average item’s selling price.
- No new FBA fee types were introduced for 2026.
- This followed a year with no increase to US referral and FBA fees in 2025.
- Amazon gave sellers at least 90 days of notice before increases took effect.
- Amazon characterized the increase as smaller than the 3.9% to 5.9% annual cost increases from other major US carriers over the prior two years.
An average is not your average. A $0.08 blended increase can land very differently on a 2 lb bulky item than on a 4 oz small standard item, which is exactly why the Revenue Calculator matters more than any headline number.
Which FBA fees surprise sellers most often?
The fulfillment fee is the one everyone models. These are the ones that show up on the statement and were never in the spreadsheet.
- Aged inventory surcharge. Charged monthly for all items stored in a fulfillment center for more than 181 days. Slow movers accrue this quietly, month after month.
- Returns processing. Charged on orders when Amazon provides a customer with free return shipping. High-return categories such as apparel feel this hardest.
- Removal, disposal, and liquidation orders. A per-item charge to get inventory back out of the network.
- FBA inbound placement service. For standard and large bulky products, this covers distributing your inventory to fulfillment centers close to customers.
- Seasonal storage. Amazon states storage costs vary seasonally, with potentially higher rates during holiday months (Amazon, A guide to Amazon FBA fees, July 24, 2026).
All five amounts are published only inside Seller Central. Pull them for your own SKUs before Q4 planning, not after.
Is FBA or a 3PL cheaper for your brand?
Honest answer: for small, light, fast-moving products sold mainly on Amazon, FBA is usually the better economic choice, and the Prime badge lift is real. Amazon states that shipping with FBA costs 70% less per unit than comparable premium options offered by other major US carriers, citing its 2024 Amazon Small Business Empowerment Report. For a 6 oz supplement bottle turning inventory every 30 days, a 3PL will rarely beat that on landed cost.
The comparison shifts when your catalog is bulky, slow-moving, multi-channel, or brand-experience driven.
| Factor | Amazon FBA | Third-party logistics (3PL) |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing basis | Per-unit fee driven by price, weight, and dimensions | Pick and pack plus negotiated carrier rate, quoted per order |
| Storage basis | Monthly, daily average cubic feet, seasonal variation | Monthly, typically per pallet, bin, or shelf |
| Slow-moving inventory | Aged inventory surcharge after 181 days | Usually just ongoing storage, no aging penalty |
| Prime eligibility | Yes, including free two-day shipping through Prime | Only via Seller Fulfilled Prime or Buy with Prime |
| Branded unboxing and inserts | Amazon packaging, minimal customization | Custom boxes, inserts, kitting, gift notes |
| Channels served | Amazon, plus other channels via Multi-Channel Fulfillment | Shopify, wholesale, retail, marketplaces from one pool |
When does a 3PL actually win on total cost?
Four situations, based on what Atomix Logistics sees when brands run the numbers side by side.
- Bulky or heavy SKUs. FBA fulfillment fees climb with size and weight. A 3PL quoting a negotiated carrier rate plus pick and pack often lands lower on oversized goods.
- Inventory that turns slower than 181 days. The aged inventory surcharge is a hard cliff. Warehouse storage is not.
- Multi-channel brands. Splitting inventory between FBA and a DTC warehouse means buying safety stock twice. One pooled 3PL location removes that duplication.
- Brand-experience DTC. If unboxing, inserts, subscription kitting, or gift messaging drive repeat rate, FBA cannot deliver it.
The practical answer for most growing brands is both: FBA for the fast-moving Amazon hero SKUs, a 3PL for everything else. Before you decide, read our Amazon FBA vs FBM vs 3PL comparison, then calculate your true fulfillment cost per order so you are comparing like with like.
How do you lower your Amazon FBA fees?
- Shrink the package. Fulfillment fees are driven by dimensions and weight. Removing a half inch of void fill can move a SKU into a cheaper size tier.
- Keep inventory under 181 days. Restock in smaller, more frequent shipments rather than one large drop.
- Use Low-Price FBA where eligible. Amazon offers reduced fulfillment rates for products priced under $10.
- Consider Amazon Warehousing and Distribution for bulk. Amazon states AWD has no seasonal surcharges and includes FBA inbound placement services.
- Claim new seller incentives. Amazon lists $100 off Amazon Partnered Carrier inbound shipments, a $200 Amazon Global Logistics credit, a $400 inbound placement credit, and free storage and customer returns through auto-enrollment in FBA New Selection (Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon, retrieved August 2026).

Frequently asked questions about Amazon FBA fees
How much are Amazon FBA fees per item?
Amazon FBA fees per item depend on the product’s price, weight, and dimensions, and Amazon does not publish a public per-unit rate card. To get your exact number, run the ASIN through the Amazon Revenue Calculator at sellercentral.amazon.com/revcalpublic, then add the referral fee for your category.
What is the Amazon FBA calculator called now?
Amazon now calls it the Revenue Calculator. The public version, which needs no seller login, is at sellercentral.amazon.com/revcalpublic. Older names such as FBA calculator, FBA fee calculator, and profitability calculator all point to the same tool.
Did Amazon FBA fees go up in 2026?
Yes. Amazon announced on October 15, 2025 that FBA fees would increase by an average of $0.08 per unit sold, or less than 0.5% of an average item’s selling price, effective January 15, 2026. Amazon also stated no new FBA fee types were introduced for 2026.
What is the Amazon referral fee?
The Amazon referral fee is a percentage of an item’s total sales price, charged on every sale regardless of fulfillment method. Rates run from 5% to 45% by category, with a $0.30 minimum in most categories, per Amazon’s pricing page retrieved August 2026.
How much does Amazon charge for storage?
Amazon charges monthly storage based on the space your inventory occupies, calculated on daily average volume in cubic feet, and states that rates vary seasonally with potentially higher rates during holiday months. The exact per-cubic-foot rates are published inside Seller Central rather than on Amazon’s public pages.
What is the FBA aged inventory surcharge?
The FBA aged inventory surcharge is a monthly charge on all items stored in an Amazon fulfillment center for more than 181 days. It is separate from the standard monthly storage fee and is the fee most likely to erode margin on slow-moving SKUs.
Does FBA cost more than a 3PL?
Not always. For small, light, fast-turning products sold mainly on Amazon, FBA is usually cheaper, and Amazon states FBA shipping costs 70% less per unit than comparable premium options from other major US carriers. A 3PL typically wins on bulky items, inventory turning slower than 181 days, and multi-channel or branded-packaging brands.
How much does an Amazon selling plan cost?
The Amazon Individual selling plan costs $0.99 per item sold, and the Professional selling plan costs $39.99 per month, per Amazon’s pricing page retrieved August 2026. Both plans can use FBA. Amazon notes FBA may be more cost-effective at 40 or more items per month on a Professional plan.
Are there closing fees on Amazon?
Yes, for media. Books, DVD, music, software, and video incur a closing fee of $1.80 per item in addition to the 15% referral fee, per Amazon’s pricing page retrieved August 2026.
How can I reduce my FBA fulfillment fees?
Reduce package dimensions and weight to drop into a cheaper size tier, keep inventory turning inside 181 days to avoid the aged inventory surcharge, use Low-Price FBA rates for products under $10, and consider Amazon Warehousing and Distribution for bulk storage, which Amazon states has no seasonal surcharges.
Where can I see my actual Amazon fees per SKU?
Use the Fee Preview report in Seller Central. From the main menu, hover over Reports, select Fulfillment, then Fee Preview. This returns estimated fees per unit for your own catalog rather than a generic rate.
How often does Amazon change FBA fees?
Amazon updates its US referral and FBA fee schedule at least annually, typically announcing changes near the end of the calendar year and giving sellers at least 90 days before increases take effect. Treat any FBA fee figure older than twelve months as unreliable.
