THE BASICS

How USPS Shipping Costs Are Calculated

Zones: Distance Sets the Price

USPS groups destinations into Zones 1 through 9 based on the distance between the origin and destination ZIP codes. Zone 1 covers local deliveries within about 50 miles, and Zone 8 covers 1,800 miles or more. Each step up in zone raises the price. To see how distance also affects delivery speed, try our Shipping Transit Time Calculator.

Weight and Dimensional Weight

USPS prices parcels by the pound and rounds up to the next pound, though Ground Advantage also has 4, 8, 12 and 15.99 oz tiers. For boxes larger than one cubic foot, USPS charges the greater of the actual weight or the dimensional weight: length × width × height divided by 139. Boxes longer than 22 inches or larger than two cubic feet also pay a nonstandard fee.

Commercial vs. Retail Prices

Retail prices apply when you pay at a Post Office counter. Commercial prices apply to labels bought online through USPS Click-N-Ship, shipping software or a fulfillment partner, and they're lower for every service. High-volume shippers and 3PLs can negotiate rates below the published commercial prices.

Cutting USPS Costs With Closer Inventory

Atomix runs fulfillment centers in Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Salt Lake City. Shipping each order from the warehouse closest to the customer keeps more packages in Zones 1 to 4, where USPS prices are lowest, and Atomix clients get discounted USPS, UPS and FedEx rates on top of that.

2026 Holiday Price Change

USPS raised Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage prices temporarily for the 2026 holiday season, from October 4, 2026 through January 17, 2027. This calculator uses the current USPS price list, so the increase is already included. Expect prices to change again after January 17.
