How Your SKU Count Changes a 3PL Quote

Short answer: Your SKU count changes a 3PL quote mainly through storage, receiving and pick complexity, not through a fee labeled “per SKU.” Each active SKU needs its own storage location, its own count on every inbound shipment and its own pick face, so two brands shipping the same number of orders can get very different quotes. In the worked example below, a 240-SKU brand pays about $0.93 more per order than a 12-SKU brand at identical volume, roughly 25% more, almost all of it from storage and receiving.

Why does SKU count affect 3PL pricing at all?

A 3PL prices the work and the space your inventory creates. A wider catalog creates more of both, even when total units and order volume stay flat:

  • Storage locations. Every SKU needs at least one location. A catalog of 240 slow-selling SKUs can occupy 240 bins, while 12 fast sellers with the same total units fit on a handful of pallets.
  • Receiving. Single-SKU pallets are quick to check in. Mixed cartons with dozens of SKUs have to be sorted, counted and labeled one SKU at a time, which is why some warehouses bill mixed inbound by the hour.
  • Pick complexity. More SKUs means more locations to travel between and more look-alike items that can be mis-picked. Wider catalogs also tend to produce multi-item orders, which carry additional-item fees.
  • Inventory control. Cycle counts, lot or expiry tracking and reorder monitoring all scale with SKU count.

SKU, defined: a stock keeping unit, the unique code for each sellable version of a product. Every size, color or scent with its own barcode is a separate SKU to the warehouse. Our guide to SKU management covers how to structure them.

Which 3PL fees scale with SKU count?

These benchmarks come from The Fulfillment Advisor's 2025 Costs and Pricing Survey of 600+ warehouses, as reported by Fulfill.com. They show the unit each fee is billed in, which is what decides whether your catalog size matters.

Fee lineSurvey averageHow SKU count changes it
Bin storage$3.08 per bin per monthRoughly one bin per slow or small SKU, so it grows almost one for one with the catalog
Pallet storage$20.17 per pallet per monthEfficient for deep stock of a few SKUs; wasteful when a pallet holds one slow SKU
Receiving$10.52 per pallet, or $39.88 per hourMixed-SKU cartons take longer to sort and count, and hourly billing captures that
Pick and pack$3.20 first item, $0.48 each additionalSame rate per pick, but wider catalogs tend to produce more items per order
Kitting and special projectsHourlyBundles and variety packs multiply component SKUs

For a deeper look at the storage units themselves, see 3PL storage fees by pallet, shelf and bin.

What does a bigger catalog cost per order? A worked example

Assumptions, stated explicitly: two brands each ship 1,000 orders a month at 1.5 items per order and hold about the same total inventory cube. Brand A sells 12 SKUs: 12 pick bins plus 6 pallets of reserve stock, received as 6 single-SKU pallets a month. Brand B sells 240 SKUs: 240 pick bins plus 3 pallets of reserve for its top sellers, received as 3 pallets plus mixed cartons that take an assumed 8 extra labor hours a month to sort and count. All rates are the survey averages above. Shipping, account fees and returns are excluded because they don't depend on SKU count.

LineBrand A: 12 SKUsBrand B: 240 SKUs
Bin storage12 × $3.08 = $36.96240 × $3.08 = $739.20
Pallet storage6 × $20.17 = $121.023 × $20.17 = $60.51
Receiving6 × $10.52 = $63.123 × $10.52 + 8 hr × $39.88 = $350.60
Pick and pack1,000 × $3.20 + 500 × $0.48 = $3,440.00$3,440.00
Monthly total$3,661.10$4,590.31
Per order$3.66$4.59

Same orders, same pick fees, about $929 a month apart. The gap comes from bins held for slow SKUs and the labor of receiving mixed cartons. If Brand B's wider catalog also pushed it to two items per order, its additional-item picks would add another $240 a month at the survey rate.

How can you keep a growing catalog from inflating your quote?

  1. Sort SKUs by velocity. An ABC analysis shows which SKUs earn their storage location. The C items are where storage cost per unit sold is highest.
  2. Match the storage unit to the SKU. Small, slow SKUs belong in bins or shelves; deep stock of fast movers belongs on pallets. Ask the 3PL whether it will store each SKU in the unit that fits it.
  3. Send clean, single-SKU inbound where you can. Cartons labeled by SKU with an advance ship notice turn hourly receiving into per-pallet or per-carton receiving.
  4. Retire dead SKUs before you move. Liquidate or bundle slow variants rather than paying to receive and store them at a new warehouse.
  5. Pre-build bundles. Variety packs assembled in advance pick as one SKU instead of several. See how kitting and assembly is scoped.

What should you ask a 3PL about SKU-driven costs?

  • How do you decide whether each SKU goes in a bin, shelf or pallet, and can I see that mapping?
  • Is mixed-SKU inbound billed per carton, per pallet or per hour?
  • Are inserts, packaging and promotional items stored and billed as SKUs?
  • Do lot or expiry-tracked SKUs carry an extra fee?
  • What does my quote look like at my current SKU count and at double it?

How does Atomix handle SKU count in a quote?

Atomix builds every quote around your order volume and product mix, and its fulfillment pricing page states that storage is billed only for the space your inventory actually uses. Receiving is priced by the box, pallet, truck or container depending on shipment size, and there are no order volume minimums. Each brand's SKUs are slotted next to its dedicated Atomix Pod, and lot tracking with FIFO and FEFO controls is automated. Inserts are treated like SKUs, stored in your Pod and verified with two-step scans. For the full fee picture, see how much a 3PL costs in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Do 3PLs charge per SKU?

The common fee lines in the 2025 survey benchmarks are billed per order, item, pallet, bin or hour rather than per SKU, but SKU count drives several of them: storage locations, receiving labor, pick travel, cycle counts and lot tracking. Expect a wider catalog to raise your all-in cost per order even at the same order volume.

How many SKUs is too many for a 3PL?

There is no hard cap. The cost question is how many of those SKUs sell slowly. Slow movers still occupy a storage location every month, so a long tail of low-velocity SKUs raises cost per order more than the SKU count itself.

Is bin storage cheaper than pallet storage for a large catalog?

Usually, for small, slow SKUs. In the 2025 survey a bin averaged $3.08 a month and a pallet $20.17, so a SKU that fits in a bin costs far less there than on its own pallet. Fast movers with deep stock are often cheaper on pallets.

Do product variants count as separate SKUs?

Yes. Every size, color or scent that needs its own barcode and location is a separate SKU to the warehouse, even if your store shows it as one product.

How should I share my catalog with a 3PL for an accurate quote?

Send a SKU list with dimensions, weight, units on hand and monthly units sold per SKU, plus a recent order export. That lets the 3PL price storage by actual cube and velocity instead of guessing.
