Short answer: UPS raises its 2027 Daily Rates an average net 5.9% on December 21, 2026, and FedEx raises standard U.S. list rates an average 5.9% on January 4, 2027. The headline is the same, but the surcharges most DTC orders pay rise faster: the UPS Ground residential surcharge goes from $6.50 to $7.10 (+9.2%) and the FedEx Ground and Home Delivery residential charge from $6.45 to $6.90 (+7.0%). For a typical residential order, that pushes the real increase above 5.9%.

When do the 2027 UPS and FedEx rate increases take effect?

CarrierAverage list increaseEffectiveOther dated changes
UPS5.9% average net on Ground, Air and International Daily RatesDecember 21, 2026Area surcharge ZIP list and zone ZIP alignments change Dec. 21; new surge fee on some Ground and Ground Saver shipments; paper shipping document surcharges Jan. 4, 2027
FedEx5.9% average on U.S., export and import package list ratesJanuary 4, 2027$25 paper document fee and $5 paper air waybill fee Jan. 18; zone changes for select ZIP pairs Feb. 1, 2027

Both dates come from the carriers' own rate pages: UPS shipping rates and updates and FedEx rate changes. Note the UPS increase lands before Christmas, in the middle of peak shipping.

Which 2027 surcharges change the most for DTC orders?

DTC brands ship mostly to homes, so residential and delivery area surcharges matter more than the base rate on many labels. These are list (undiscounted) amounts per package.

UPS 2027 surcharge changes

Surcharge20262027Change
Residential, Ground$6.50$7.10+9.2%

Additional handling, weight, Zone 2$46.50$50.50+8.6%

UPS figures are from its 2027 preview of package value-added services and other charges, linked from the UPS rates page and summarized by D'Arrigo Consulting. UPS also raises the minimum billable weight for Additional Handling packages from 40 to 50 lbs.

What does the 2027 increase cost per order? A worked example

Assumptions, stated explicitly: a 3 lb residential order on UPS Ground at list rates. We assume a base rate of $9.00 for illustration only, because base rates vary by zone and weight; check your own rate card or a zone chart. We apply the 5.9% average to the base, which is a simplification, since UPS says actual impact varies by shipping profile.

Line20262027
Base rate (assumed, +5.9%)$9.00$9.53
Residential surcharge, Ground$6.50$7.10
Total$15.50$16.63

That is a $1.13 rise, or 7.3%, not 5.9%. If the address is also in a delivery area ZIP, add another $0.60 for the residential delivery area surcharge. At 5,000 residential orders a month, $1.13 an order is about $5,650 a month before any discounts. Your contract discounts may apply to some or all of these lines, which is why the next step is to check your own invoices rather than the headline.

How should DTC brands prepare for the 2027 rate increase?

  1. Re-price your shipping with surcharges included. Pull a month of invoices and count how many labels carried residential, delivery area or additional handling charges. Those lines rise faster than the base.
  2. Check your box sizes. Billed weight still drives the base rate. Our DIM Weight Calculator and DIM weight chart for common box sizes show where a smaller carton cuts billed pounds.
  3. Know your zone mix. Zone ZIP alignments change at both carriers. See how to find your average shipping zone from an order export.
  4. Watch for packages near 50 lbs. The higher UPS minimum billable weight for Additional Handling packages affects heavy or bulky products.
  5. Update free-shipping thresholds and checkout rates before December 21, not after January invoices arrive.
  6. Ask your 3PL how it will pass through 2027 rates. If your fulfillment partner ships on its own carrier accounts, its discounts, not list prices, set your cost.

For temporary holiday fees on top of this, see peak season shipping surcharges. For a carrier comparison, see FedEx vs UPS cost.

What should you ask your 3PL about 2027 carrier rates?

  • Do you ship on your own carrier accounts, and are rates passed through at your discounted rate or marked up?
  • Which surcharges are discounted in your agreement: residential, delivery area, additional handling?
  • Can you rate-shop UPS, FedEx and USPS per order rather than defaulting to one carrier?
  • Will you show surcharges as separate invoice lines so I can track them?
  • How will you handle UPS's new surge fee on Ground and Ground Saver if it applies to your origin ZIPs?

Atomix passes shipping charges through at its discounted rates, as stated on its fulfillment pricing page, and ships from Milwaukee, Salt Lake City and Baltimore. To see what your current orders would cost from those locations, upload an export to the free Order History Analyzer.

Frequently asked questions

How much are UPS rates going up in 2027?

UPS Daily Rates for Ground, Air and International services increase an average net 5.9%, effective December 21, 2026. Several surcharges rise more, including the Ground residential surcharge, which goes from $6.50 to $7.10.

When does the FedEx 2027 rate increase take effect?

FedEx's 5.9% average increase on U.S., export and import package list rates takes effect January 4, 2027. New paper document fees start January 18, and zone changes for select ZIP code pairs start February 1, 2027.

Why is my real increase higher than 5.9%?

The 5.9% is an average across base rates. Residential, delivery area and handling surcharges are flat per-package fees that rose 6% to 9% at list price, so orders that carry them rise faster. In the worked example in this article, a residential order rises 7.3%.

Do discounts protect me from the 2027 increase?

Only partly. Percentage discounts apply to the new, higher list rates, so you still pay more in dollars. Check which surcharges your agreement discounts, because many are billed at or near list.

What is the UPS surge fee for 2027?

UPS says that from December 21, 2026, domestic Ground and Ground Saver shipments from certain origin ZIP codes will carry an extra per-package surge fee for qualified customers. UPS said origin ZIP details would be available in early November, so check its rates page for the current amounts.
