Wayfair CastleGate vs. Dropship With a 3PL: How Home Goods Brands Should Fulfill Wayfair Orders

Short answer: Wayfair suppliers can fulfill orders two ways. With dropship, you keep inventory in your own warehouse or your 3PL's, and ship each Wayfair order when it arrives. With CastleGate, you send inventory into Wayfair's own fulfillment network and Wayfair ships it. CastleGate usually wins on delivery speed for your fastest-moving Wayfair SKUs; dropship through a 3PL usually wins when you sell on several channels, carry a long-tail catalog, or want one inventory pool. Many home goods brands run both.
What is Wayfair CastleGate?
CastleGate is Wayfair's logistics network for home goods, including fragile, heavy and bulky items. It has two main parts:
- CastleGate Forwarding handles inbound logistics and ocean freight, moving supplier inventory from origin into Wayfair's network.
- CastleGate Fulfillment stores that inventory and ships Wayfair orders. Wayfair says it delivers to 97% of U.S. customers in as little as two days.
According to Supply Chain Dive (September 2025), CastleGate spans about 22 million square feet across 60 buildings, products shipped from Wayfair's fulfillment centers accounted for 25% of Wayfair's revenue, and Wayfair opened a multichannel service to its full supplier base in 2025 so suppliers can use CastleGate for orders from other channels too.
How does Wayfair dropship work?
In dropship, Wayfair sends you the order and you ship it from your own stock. Through Wayfair's supplier portal, Partner Home, suppliers manage inventory status and ship dates, print packing slips and shipping labels, and for large shipments get bills of lading and manifests and coordinate carrier pickups. Suppliers connect either by API, which exchanges order and inventory data in real time, or by EDI, which exchanges data at regular intervals and needs less development work. A 3PL with a Wayfair integration takes over those steps for you.
CastleGate vs. dropship: how do they compare?
- Inventory location: CastleGate holds stock in Wayfair's buildings; dropship keeps it in yours or your 3PL's.
- Delivery speed on Wayfair: CastleGate is built for fast delivery to most U.S. customers; dropship speed depends on your 3PL's network and where its warehouses sit.
- Other channels: dropship inventory at a 3PL can serve your DTC site, Amazon and wholesale from one pool; CastleGate stock was historically Wayfair-only, though the multichannel service is changing that for some suppliers.
- Inventory risk: CastleGate requires forecasting how much to commit to Wayfair's network; dropship lets you hold one buffer for every channel.
- Operational control: dropship keeps packing, inspection and kitting decisions with you and your 3PL.
When does CastleGate make more sense?
- Wayfair is a large share of your revenue and a handful of SKUs drive most Wayfair sales.
- Your products are bulky and travel far from your current warehouse to most Wayfair customers.
- You can forecast Wayfair demand well enough to commit inventory without stranding it.
When does dropship through a 3PL make more sense?
- You sell the same products on your own site, Amazon, other marketplaces or wholesale and want one inventory pool.
- Your Wayfair catalog is wide, with many slow-moving SKUs that are hard to forecast.
- Your 3PL already reaches most customers in two days by ground from multiple nodes.
- You need kitting, custom packaging or inspection steps that are easier to control in your own operation.
Can you use both?
Yes, and it is often the strongest setup. A common split is to place the top Wayfair sellers in CastleGate for speed and keep the long tail, plus all non-Wayfair channels, at a 3PL. The work is in allocation: decide how much of each SKU goes to CastleGate, set a reorder trigger, and keep the 3PL's Wayfair inventory feed accurate so you do not oversell the dropship side. What should you ask a 3PL about Wayfair dropship?
- Do you integrate with Wayfair today, and by API or EDI?
- How quickly do you acknowledge orders and confirm shipment back to Wayfair?
- Can you handle both parcel and freight-size Wayfair orders, including bills of lading and scheduled pickups?
- How do you protect large or fragile items in packing, and what is your damage rate?
- Does Wayfair inventory come from the same pool as my other channels, and how often does the feed update?

How does Atomix support Wayfair sellers?
Atomix integrates with Wayfair through the Atomix App, alongside Amazon, Walmart, Target, Shopify and more than 100 other channels, so Wayfair orders draw from the same inventory as everything else you sell. Fulfillment centers in Milwaukee, Salt Lake City and Baltimore together reach more than 80% of the U.S. in two days by ground.
Frequently asked questions
Is CastleGate required to sell on Wayfair?
No. Wayfair supports suppliers who dropship from their own warehouse through Partner Home, and suppliers can add CastleGate on top of their own fulfillment.
Does Wayfair provide shipping labels for dropship orders?
Wayfair's supplier portal lets suppliers print packing slips and shipping labels and, for large shipments, get bills of lading and coordinate carrier pickups.
Can CastleGate fulfill orders from other channels?
Wayfair launched a multichannel CastleGate service and opened it to its full supplier base in 2025, according to Supply Chain Dive. Check current terms with Wayfair.
Should I connect to Wayfair by API or EDI?
API exchanges order and inventory data in real time; EDI exchanges it at intervals with less development work. If you use a 3PL, it usually depends on which connection the 3PL already supports.
What is the main risk of CastleGate?
Inventory committed to Wayfair's network can't easily serve your other channels, so poor forecasting can leave stock stranded in one place while another channel runs out.
