Target Plus Fulfillment: What the 24-Hour Ship Rule Means for Your 3PL Setup

Short answer: Target Plus is Target's invite-only marketplace, and sellers fulfill their own orders: Target sends each order to you, and you ship it from your own warehouse or a 3PL's. Published seller guides describe a 24-hour dispatch expectation, delivery within about five business days, shipping with UPS, FedEx or USPS, and no use of Amazon's fulfillment network for Target orders. That makes the 3PL decision less about cost and more about whether your warehouse can ship every Target order the next day, weekends included, from inventory it shares with your other channels.

What is Target Plus?

Target Plus is the third-party marketplace on Target.com, launched in 2019. Shopify's overview describes it as invite-only and limited to U.S.-based businesses, with listings from more than 1,500 brands. Sellers need a registered U.S. business address, a U.S. bank account, a W-9, an EIN and a DUNS number. There is no monthly seller fee; Target takes a referral commission, which both Shopify and Spreetail put at roughly 5% to 15% depending on category.

Target shares its detailed operating requirements with approved partners, so treat the figures below as what seller guides report and confirm current terms during onboarding.

What are the Target Plus fulfillment requirements?

  • Dispatch within 24 hours. Shopify and Spreetail both describe shipping within 24 hours of the order. Spreetail adds that this applies seven days a week, so weekend orders carry the same deadline.
  • Delivery in about five business days. Shopify cites arrival within five business days; Spreetail says delivery should land inside the window shown at checkout, typically two to five business days.
  • Approved carriers. UPS, FedEx and USPS.
  • Ship from inside the U.S. The marketplace is domestic only.
  • No Amazon fulfillment for Target orders. Spreetail reports that Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment cannot be used for Target Plus orders, so inventory sitting in FBA cannot serve this channel.
  • Performance affects visibility. Spreetail lists dispatch rate, on-time delivery and cancellation rate as factors in Target Plus search ranking.
  • Returns come back to you. Shopify notes that sellers carry the cost of returns, and Spreetail notes that returned inventory goes back to the seller, so your warehouse needs a returns process for this channel too.

Why does the 24-hour rule change your 3PL math?

Many 3PLs promise same-day or next-business-day shipping for orders received before a daily cutoff. That sounds like it meets a 24-hour rule, but the gaps show up on weekends and around cutoffs. A worked example with a 2 p.m. weekday cutoff and no weekend shipping:

  • Order at 1 p.m. Tuesday: ships Tuesday. Comfortably inside 24 hours.
  • Order at 4 p.m. Tuesday: misses the cutoff, ships Wednesday morning. Inside 24 hours if it leaves before 4 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Order at 4 p.m. Friday: the 24-hour window closes at 4 p.m. Saturday. With no weekend shipping, it leaves Monday, roughly 72 hours later.

If a meaningful share of your Target orders lands Friday afternoon through Sunday, a weekday-only operation will miss the dispatch window on those orders every week. Before you accept an invite, pull your order timestamps from your own site and Amazon, estimate the weekend share, and ask your 3PL directly how it handles Saturday and Sunday orders. Our guide to order cutoff times explains how cutoffs and carrier pickups interact.

Should Target Plus orders come from the same inventory as your other channels?

Usually yes. Because FBA stock cannot serve Target orders, brands that keep most inventory in Amazon's network have two options: hold a separate pool at a 3PL for Target and other non-Amazon channels, or move to a 3PL that fulfills Amazon (FBM or Seller Fulfilled Prime) alongside Target, Walmart and your own site from one pool. One pool reduces stranded inventory, but it makes the inventory feed more important: if your 3PL updates Target's available quantity slowly, you oversell and pay for it in cancellations.

The same trade-off appears on other retail marketplaces; see our comparisons of Walmart Fulfillment Services vs. a 3PL and Wayfair CastleGate vs. dropship.

How do Target Plus orders reach a 3PL?

Orders, shipment confirmations and inventory updates move between Target and the seller electronically, either through an EDI connection or through a channel integration that sits between Target and your systems. Shopify, for example, notes that its Marketplace Connect app can link a Shopify catalog to Target Plus. Whatever the route, the 3PL needs to receive orders quickly, send tracking back promptly, and push inventory often enough to protect your cancellation rate. Our EDI guide explains the document types involved.

What should you ask a 3PL before launching on Target Plus?

  1. Do you integrate with Target today, and how do orders and tracking move: EDI, API or a channel partner?
  2. Do you ship on Saturdays and Sundays? If not, what share of my historical orders would miss a 24-hour dispatch window?
  3. What is your daily cutoff, and what were your on-time ship rates for the last three months?
  4. How often do you push available inventory to Target, and do you push after receiving and returns as well as on a schedule?
  5. Which of your warehouses would serve Target orders, and how many U.S. customers can each reach in five business days by ground?
  6. How do you receive and grade Target returns, and how quickly do restockable units become available again?

How does Atomix support Target Plus sellers?

Target is one of the channels listed on the Atomix integrations page. Through the Atomix App, the fulfillment software Atomix built in-house, Target orders draw from the same inventory as Amazon, Walmart, Shopify and more than 100 other channels, with orders, inventory, shipments and returns in one dashboard and line-item billing. Fulfillment centers in Milwaukee, Salt Lake City and Baltimore ship by UPS, USPS and FedEx. Bring your order timestamps to a strategy call and we will walk through how your Target volume maps to our cutoffs and shipping days.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Amazon FBA or Multi-Channel Fulfillment for Target Plus orders?

Seller guides from Spreetail and Bellavix say no. Plan to fulfill Target orders from your own warehouse or a 3PL.

Can I apply to Target Plus?

Target Plus is invite-only. Seller guides describe Target selecting brands, and some note an inquiry route through plus.target.com, so building a strong delivery and review record on other marketplaces is the usual preparation.

How fast do Target Plus orders need to ship?

Published seller guides describe dispatch within 24 hours and delivery within about five business days, using UPS, FedEx or USPS. Confirm the current standard with Target during onboarding.

What does Target Plus charge sellers?

There is no monthly fee. Target takes a referral commission of roughly 5% to 15% depending on category, according to Shopify and Spreetail. Fulfillment and shipping costs are yours.

Who handles Target Plus returns?

Returned inventory comes back to the seller, and sellers carry the cost, so your 3PL should receive, inspect and restock Target returns the same way it handles returns from your other channels.
